Project Title

Concrete Waste Diversion

Project Description

Seven structures, including a 19,750 square foot cold-storage building, were part of the Fort Jackson 2005 Deconstruction Waste Diversion project. One hundred percent of the concrete from these buildings was stockpiled for crushing and later re-used throughout the installation. The 2005 Deconstruction Waste Diversion project was so successful that the installation continues to stockpile waste concrete from demolition projects until enough material and funding is available to warrant an additional crushing contract.

At the end of cyclic year 2008, over 12,000 tons of concrete have been processed. Approximately 95 percent of the processed concrete has been re-used on the installation for road improvements and erosion control.

Benefits
  • Mission Fort Jackson's concrete recycling projects have saved limited resource space in landfills and have provided materials for re-use to units and tenants. They have also decreased the installation's operating budget.
  • Community The projects have created a reduction in solid waste disposal to municipal landfills.
  • Environment Fort Jackson has recycled a waste material into a marketable product while extending the life of local landfills.
Cost Data
  • Project Cost $13.80/ton to process 5,000 tons of concrete in the first contract (cost = $69,000).
  • Cost Avoided Before the concrete recycling projects, the cost per ton of new crush-o-run and the disposal of a ton of waste concrete equaled $29.25/ton (not including the cost of transporting the waste concrete to the landfill). With the recycling program, Fort Jackson has avoided approximately $146,250 for the original 5,000 tons processed. Since the end of 2008, total cost avoidance is approximately $351,000 for 12,000 tons.
  • Cost Saved Savings is approximately $77,250 for the 5,000 tons processed; potential overall savings is approximately $185,400 (assuming a processing cost of $13.80/ton for the entire stockpile).
