Project Title

EcoPark

Project Description

Through Fort Lewis' EcoPark project, a 240-acre former EPA National Priority List landfill site will be redeveloped in a manner that enhances both the installation's Sustainability Program and the Use of Training Lands. The EcoPark will restore wetlands, woodlands, and native prairie, as well as provide energy self-sufficient facilities such as the Platinum Conference and Training Center and the Recycling and Reuse Center. Restoration to these ecosystems will develop habitat and reduce Fort Lewis' impact on the environment. The new facilities will serve as ideal centers and meeting points between the community and installation. These facilities will also provide an opportunity for Fort Lewis to educate and demonstrate cost effect management and use of landfill gas. These projects will be designed to benefit Mission, Community, and Environment.

Benefits
  • Mission Enhancing our Soldiers lives by providing park and physical training exercise areas and saving tax payer money through using resources and energy already present at the landfill.
  • Community Providing an area for community outreach programs as well as social and recreational areas.
  • Environment Creating sensitive habitats, recycling materials, creating energy, and limiting gas emissions from the landfill.
Cost Savings
  • $4 million savings related to storm water management
  • $800 thousand per year saving related to material reuse
  • Substantial savings related to harnessing energy from landfill gas
  • Decreases costs to maintain landfill cap
