Fort Bragg
Sustainable Transportation
In an effort to support the current mobilization mission and offer an alternative to driving, Fort Bragg developed and implemented an intra-installation shuttle bus program. The shuttle system consists of 12 stops strategically located which allow access to over 400 buildings. It also connects the Trans Multi Modal Hub (transfer station and under development) to the Airport Shuttle, Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST) City Bus, Taxi service, and eventually a regional connector for 11 counties.
The shuttle service offers free transportation to wounded warriors, family members, civilians, government contractors and soldiers (reservists, National Guard and active duty), most of whom do not have private vehicles. In 2008, this transportation system moved over 35,000 passengers and this number is expected to increase in the following years. Currently, Fort Bragg is funding an alternative transportation study to better meet the transportation needs of the installation. The goal is to forecast the transportation needs from 2009 to 2015 by assessing the construction and population growth in the area.
The team is actively working on expanding the service to the west, east and south of the facility increasing the number of routes and services they are currently providing to the installation and the community. Additionally, seven ADA (American with Disabilities Act) compliance buses will be added to the current shuttle bus system in November 2009.
