The property formerly known as both the Western Electric Site and Tarheel Army Missile Plant has a long history from fabric to electronic components manufacturing with operations occurring from 1927-2002. In 2003 a Finding of Suitability for Early Transfer (FOSET) was completed and signed by key stakeholders from the State, Army, County, and City. This allowed the property to be sold for private use through the General Service Administration (GSA). In 2016 the Army began a remedial investigation to address TCE contamination. The Army completed that investigation with the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) in 2022 and is currently working on a feasibility study and remedial design to address the TCE in the groundwater.
